Addressing Violence and Promoting Safety in AAPI Communities Through Cultural Connection

Asian Media Access (AMA) has leveraged cultural connectedness as a powerful tool to address violence and foster resilience within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Recognizing the pivotal role of cultural celebrations in information/resource exchange, particularly for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) members, AMA has sought to rebuild these vital connections lost during the pandemic and due to the relocation of major events like the Minneapolis Hmong New Year. Lack of Hmong New Year Celebration in Minneapolis, depriving Hmong and other AAPI residents of crucial opportunities to engage with their community, exchange information, and connect with local government programs and services.

in 2024 along, Asian Media Access (AMA) has made significant strides in addressing violence and fostering cultural pride within the AAPI community through a series of impactful initiatives. One key area of success has been the delivery of Community Safety Trainings, which have equipped 162 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) participants with practical strategies to reduce risks of crime and harm. These trainings focused on awareness, de-escalation techniques, and tactical communication, empowering individuals to protect themselves and their communities. Sessions included advice on avoiding high-risk situations, managing personal safety, and seeking help when needed. Additional youth-focused sessions at the Northside Workforce Development Center tackled issues such as identity crises, street violence, and gaming addiction while promoting conflict resolution, resilience, and leadership development.

AMA also hosted vibrant Mini Asian Food Market events that reconnected the community after the loss of significant cultural celebrations, such as the Minneapolis Hmong New Year. Events like the Asian Market Block at West Broadway Open Street and the Cultural Diet and Nutrition Fair offered a platform to celebrate Asian food and traditions while providing opportunities for face-to-face engagement and information exchange. These gatherings showcased cuisines from across Asia, emphasized “food as medicine,” and promoted wellness through interactive discussions and sampling of traditional dishes. By focusing on culturally meaningful activities, these events strengthened community pride, supported cultural exchange, and addressed issues of social isolation.

Additionally, AMA’s “Undo Violence” social media campaign leveraged digital platforms to raise awareness about mental health stressors and violence prevention strategies. The Campaign has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate resources. Youth Media Force training empowered 19 BIPOC youth to create multimedia content addressing violence prevention topics such as bullying, gun violence, and anti-racism. The campaign’s diverse communication approach, including platforms like WeChat, WhatsApp, Facebook, and instagram, ensured broader reach and engagement across AAPI communities.

Through these initiatives, AMA has successfully combined cultural celebration, education, and safety training to foster resilience, improve cultural pride, and promote community unity. These efforts not only address violence but also create lasting impacts by building safer, healthier, and more connected communities.
