This year, Asian Media Access (AMA) has had several successful Stop Anti-Asian Hate initiatives and efforts to support the Asian community. We collaborated with community members to develop videos, postcards, and articles, as well as conducted various training sessions for Asian youth groups.
There has been a history of Asian hate, xenophobia, and hate crimes throughout history. In 1854, People V. Hall ruled that Chinese people were seen as an inferior race and, therefore, unable to testify in favor or against a White person. In 1982, Vincent Chin was a Chinese American mistaken for a Japanese man and killed because Asians were the scapegoat for massive lay-offs occurring in the auto industry. Today, there has been a rise in violent acts and discrimination in the Asian community since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Especially in the United States, the pandemic revealed the continuous negative sentiment against Asian Americans. Stop Anti-Asian Hate is an effort to eliminate racism, discrimination, and violence against the Asian community.
AMA has created multiple different video productions involving diverse Asian communities of all ages and ethnicities, sharing the same message to Stop Anti-Asian Hate. Check out some of the videos available on YouTube:

Supporting the Asian community and youth, AMA held multiple different training sessions:
We invest in the Asian youth’s future and success while providing excellent support, welcome, and opportunity. It is crucial to concentrate on specific youth groups, especially racially marginalized groups to show value, foster growth, and build belonging. We support individuals, communities, families, and our partners to create an equitable environment.
Weekly Multimedia Training for Brooklyn Center Asian Student Club
Multimedia Training involves building skills in communication, leadership, and critical thinking. Students learn video and radio production, which consists in building their skills in editing and writing. They learn website and graphic design and how to publish their work on multiple social media platforms. Students learn about valuable social justice and public health subjects such as gambling prevention and take the materials to develop their designs and messages creatively. Communities of color are disproportionately impacted, and these inequalities can contribute to negative social, economic, and health incomes.
Training with Hmong College Prep Academy
AMA, along with other partner organizations, hosted a week of presentations at the Hmong College Prep Academy. Presentations include Bicultural healthy living that embraces the balance of host and heritage culture, gambling prevention, which is a prevalent problem within the Asian community, and mental wellness that demystifies the stigma of mental health in the Asian community.
Training with Prairie Seed Academy
Prairie Seed Academy students received training on Youth Financial Management, Resume Development, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Canva graphic design.
With AI, students learn how to prompt AI to create images and then transfer the images for their creative Canva postcards. When the youth saw the stereotypes that AI-generated, the youth felt the need and empowerment to share messages that show that Asians are more than just the stereotypes that box them into “Asian Nerd,” “Model Minority,” and “Perpetual Foreigner.” Stereotypes contribute to the Anti-Asian sentiment, causing a spread of false information on the qualities and culture of different Asian communities. Stereotypes are harmful as they contribute to bias, prejudice, and disparities that can negatively impact the community through generalization and discrimination. Youth share their creative work on Stop Anti-Asian Hate periodically on two social media pages, AMA and BALL Facebook.

Each month, we featured a series of understanding and stopping Anti-Asian Hate articles by Janie Ye, Minnesota high school student. Janie has written 20 Stop Anti-Asian Hate articles, and we have released and published them in our monthly newsletters. Some of these articles dive deeper into media representation, historical incidents, hate during the pandemic, and why Asians are seen as outsiders. The articles feature different contributions to the Anti-Asian sentiment and provide actions to take.
