The Artists They Became: A Look Back AMA Youth Program Alumni

AMA has witnessed remarkable transformative advancement through former youth program participants who have blossomed into professional artists making their mark on Minnesota’s cultural landscape in 2025. These emerging talents are now leading ambitious projects that celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage while pushing creative boundaries.

The year began with “Lunacy New Year – The Serpent’s Charm,” an innovative fashion show and photography exhibition project that commemorated the Lunar New Year through fashion and cultural inspiration. This multi-faceted celebration unfolded in two phases: a dynamic fashion show on January 31, 2025, at The Luminare, followed by a photography exhibition running from February 15 through March 15, 2025, at Xia Gallery & Café.

The fashion show featured six distinct collections, curated by AMA Alumni – Vivian Tran and Aeola Lu, each interpreted through the lens of the serpent’s symbolism and cultural renewal. The exhibition displays these collections in an intentional sequence—beginning with designs that directly embody the New year zodiac – serpent’s essence and evolving into themes of transformation, renewal, and cultural revival. Accompanying this fashion display is “Worlds We Live In,” a photography series, photographed by Vivian Tran. Featuring one look from each designer, the series captures the secrecy, mystery, and cultural customs woven into The Serpent’s Charm, offering a visual narrative that bridges tradition and modernity.

Later honoring Khmer New Year in April, Cambodian Artists presented the “Wisdom of Gold” at the same Xia Gallery & Café. The exhibition opened by the former AMA dancers who have evolved into leadership roles at the Wattanak Cambodian Dance Troupe: Garret Sour and Gabriella Sour. Their artistic journey from youth program participants to cultural ambassadors exemplifies the transformative leadership. The art exhibit “Wisdom of Gold” showcased portraits of Cambodian cyclo drivers and elders alongside traditional wedding dresses, creating a powerful tribute to Cambodian heritage and wisdom.
