Hmong New Year Celebrations around the US

The Hmong New Year celebrations in the U.S. are vibrant and culturally rich events that carry forward a cherished tradition of traveling to celebrate with neighboring communities. Historically, Hmong villages would host New Year festivities as a way to showcase their prosperity and unity, inviting others to join in the celebration. Today, this tradition continues as Hmong families and friends journey across cities to partake in these gatherings, fostering connection, pride, and a shared cultural heritage.

These celebrations, generally held from Labor Day through the end of the year, are hosted in various cities and feature traditional performances, colorful cultural attire, sports tournaments, and authentic Hmong cuisine. Each event serves as a vibrant showcase of community and tradition, drawing thousands of attendees who gather to honor their roots and embrace their identity.

The St. Paul Hmong New Year, held at the RiverCentre from November 30 to December 1, is the most prominent of these festivities. As the largest gathering of its kind, it draws tens of thousands of participants from across the U.S. and beyond. Families and friends often travel great distances to attend, making it a cornerstone of Hmong cultural pride. Featuring grand ceremonies, traditional dances, singing competitions, and a bustling marketplace with Hmong crafts and businesses, the St. Paul celebration exemplifies the spirit of unity and cultural exchange that defines Hmong New Year traditions.
